History
Kugahara Station opened on 1960-06-20 as a stop on the Japanese National Railways' Kihara Line in mountainous Ōtaki, Chiba. It passed briefly to JR East with privatisation on 1987-04-01 before the Kihara Line was transferred on 1988-03-24 to the third-sector Isumi Railway. From 2009-07-01 the nearby Saniku Gakuin College purchased naming rights and the station has since been signed as "Saniku Gakuin Kugahara"; the original 2012 contract has been quietly extended. The unstaffed single-platform station sits 20.8 km from Ōhara.

Notes
Since 2009 the station signage has been overstamped "Saniku Gakuin College Kugahara" under a naming-rights deal whose original 2012 expiry has quietly rolled over.
