History

Susono Station opened on 1 February 1889 as Sano Station (佐野駅) on the Tōkaidō main line of the Imperial Japanese Government Railways, in what is today the city of Susono in Shizuoka Prefecture. It was renamed Susono Station on 15 July 1915 to avoid confusion with other Sano stations elsewhere in Japan. Following the Tanna Tunnel opening on 1 December 1934, the original route via Gotemba became the Gotemba Line and Susono was relegated from the main line to a branch. Scheduled freight service ended on 10 May 1974 and baggage handling on 1 February 1984. Operations passed to JR Central with privatisation on 1 April 1987. TOICA IC fares began on 13 March 2010 and a platform elevator opened on 25 February 2017.

Notes

The town of Susono actually took its name from the station rather than the other way around — the surrounding district was unified as Susono-machi in 1952, thirty-seven years after the station was renamed.
