History
Higashi Betsuin Station opened on 30 March 1967 as part of the inaugural Sakae–Kanayama segment of the Nagoya Municipal Subway Meijō (then Line 2). Located beneath the intersection of Maezu-dōri and Sannō-dōri, it took its name from the nearby Shinshū Ōtani-ha Nagoya Betsuin temple, an outpost of Kyoto's Higashi Hongan-ji; a tram stop of the same name had previously stood on parallel Ōtsu-dōri. The station has two opposed underground side platforms and gained platform-edge doors on 20 July 2020, alongside step-free renovations that moved the toilets outside the fare gates.
