History

Aratama-bashi Station is an underground interchange on the Nagoya Municipal Subway in Mizuho-ku, Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, where the Meijō Line (M23) meets the Sakura-dōri Line (S14). It opened on 30 March 1974 as the terminus of the then Line No.4, later renamed the Meijō Line. The Sakura-dōri Line reached the station on 30 March 1994, creating the interchange, and the Meijō Line was extended further toward Nagoya Daigaku on 6 October 2004 when the loop was closed. The Meijō platforms lie 20.7 kilometres from the loop terminus at Kanayama and the Sakura-dōri platforms 11.8 kilometres from Taiko-dori, with each line served by its own island platform underground.

Notes

Aratama-bashi opened on the same day Nagoya's last streetcar line ran its final service in March 1974; for two days passengers could transfer between the new subway and the closing tram — a rare timing among Japanese transport modal handovers.
