History

Higashiyama Station (T10) is on the Kyoto Municipal Subway Tōzai Line in Ōide-chō, Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto. It opened on 12 October 1997 with the rest of the Daigo–Nijō section of the Tōzai Line, with construction handled by the third-sector Kyoto Kōsoku Tetsudō. The station replaced the surface-level Higashiyama-Sanjō stop of the predecessor Keihan Keishin Line on the Sanjō-dōri street directly above, and PiTaPa IC card service began on 1 April 2007. The platform is on the third basement level, island-style with one platform and two tracks separated from the trains by platform-edge doors. The station colour assigned to it under the Tōzai Line's per-station colour scheme is "iris" (菖蒲色).

Notes

When traffic on Higashiyama-Sanjō Avenue is heavy enough to gridlock the Kyoto City buses heading for Kyoto Station, the city sometimes runs a substitute-transport scheme letting bus passengers ride the subway free of additional charge from Higashiyama Station to Kyoto Station — invoked at officials' discretion during peak tourist season.
