History
Usami Station opened on 15 December 1938 when the Ministry of Railways' Itō Line was extended from Ajiro to Itō, giving the northern part of present-day Itō City its first rail connection. Freight handling ceased on 10 January 1963 and parcel service ended in March 1972. The station became part of JR East at privatisation on 1 April 1987 and joined the Tokyo Suica zone on 16 October 2004. On 8 March 2015 the building was de-staffed under JR East's remote operation system; an elevator linking the platforms via the footbridge was added in 2017.

Notes
From 14 March 2015 the through trains of the Ueno-Tokyo Line began calling at Usami, occasionally taking commuters from this seaside town all the way to Utsunomiya or Takasaki without changing trains.
