History

Mikumo Station opened on 15 December 1889 as the terminus of the Kansai Railway's founding section from Kusatsu; on 19 February 1890 the line extended to Tsuge and Mikumo became an intermediate station. The Kansai Railway was nationalised on 1 October 1907 to become part of the Imperial Railway Agency, and the 1909 line-naming order placed it on the Kusatsu Line. The station building was rebuilt in 1935; freight and parcel handling ceased on 1 February 1984. JR West succeeded JNR at the 1 April 1987 privatisation. Automatic turnstiles were installed in 1999 and ICOCA service began on 1 November 2003. A new third-generation overbridge station building opened on 8 April 2017, followed by the south- and north-side station plazas on 15 December 2019.
