History

Sakabe Station opened on 1 April 1931 as a stop on the Chita Railway, then the only express stop in what is now the town of Agui. Chita Railway was absorbed into Meitetsu on 1 February 1943, and the depot was rebuilt on 5 April 1964. The station lost its express stop on 21 July 1983 with the opening of Agui Station as the town's new central station, and a few express services that still called were withdrawn in the 26 March 2011 timetable change. The depot was de-staffed and the centralised station-management system installed on 30 January 2007, with Tranpass following on 14 February. The manaca IC card began on 11 February 2011, and Tranpass ended on 29 February 2012.
