History

Matogata Station opened on 19 August 1923 with the Kobe-Himeji Electric Railway, predecessor of today's Sanyo Electric Railway Main Line. It passed to Ujigawa Electric in April 1927 and to Sanyo Electric Railway in June 1933. During 1940 a siding was installed to load earth for construction of the Aboshi Line; that siding was removed in August 1945. The station building was rebuilt in March 1972 and the platforms' interconnecting footbridge entered service in April 1973. Numbered SY 36, the station has two ground-level side platforms with no platform numbers and is unstaffed. A barrier-free upgrade adding a new north gate and station-front plaza is scheduled for completion in fiscal 2026.
