History

Kayamachi Station opened on 18 July 1922 as part of the original Iga Railway's Ueno-machi (now Uenoshi) - Nabari extension. After successive corporate changes — Iga Electric Railway in 1926, Osaka Electric Railway's Iga Line in 1929, Sangū Express Electric Railway in 1931, Kansai Kyūkō Railway in 1941 — it joined Kintetsu on 1 June 1944. Freight handling ended on 1 October 1973. Kintetsu spun the line off again on 1 October 2007, making it part of the present-day Iga Railway. In 2008 the operator began free bicycle loans for rail passengers, and on 28 January 2020 the station received the sponsor sub-name "Lifeline Ueno Gas Station".
