History

Ōsakajō-kitazume Station opened on 8 March 1997 alongside the rest of the JR Tōzai Line between Kyōbashi and Amagasaki, in Amijimachō, Miyakojima-ku, Osaka. The underground station was built as a replacement for the former Katamachi Station, which was discontinued when the Gakkentoshi Line was rerouted to start at Kyōbashi. Its working name during planning was 'Katamachi' but the final name was set on 16 May 1996 to reflect the proximity of Osaka Castle's north end. ICOCA support began on 1 November 2003 and station numbering (JR-H42) was introduced on 17 March 2018. The 'Midori-no-madoguchi' staffed ticket window closed on 31 October 2025.

Notes

Although Ōsakajō-kitazume replaced the former Katamachi Station, it was opened as a brand-new station rather than a relocation, so commuter passes that started or ended at Katamachi were voided on day one.
