History

Island Center Station opened on 21 February 1990 with the rest of the Kobe New Transit Rokko Island Line, an automated guideway transit linking Rokkō Island to the JR Tōkaidō Main Line at Sumiyoshi. The station, located in Mukōyō-chō, Higashinada-ku, Kobe, is 3.9 kilometres from Sumiyoshi and is built as an elevated stop with a single island platform serving two tracks; toilets and a commuter ticket office sit on the concourse level. The line was severely damaged by the Great Hanshin earthquake on 17 January 1995 and the Island Kitaguchi-to-Marine Park section, including this station, reopened on 12 May 1995. Since 1 July 2011 the secondary name "Fashion Mart-mae" has been displayed under a naming-rights contract referencing the adjacent Kobe Fashion Mart.
