History

Izukyū-Shimoda Station opened on 10 December 1961 as the southern terminus of the Izukyū Line. On 17 March 1970 an Imperial special train arrived and departed here when the Emperor and Empress inspected the construction site of the new Imperial Villa (later Susaki Imperial Villa).

Notes

The station's exit-only ticket gate at the head-end of the platforms is built in the form of a feudal-era checkpoint gate, with a latch shaped like the historic "Black Ships" — a reference to Shimoda's role as the port where Commodore Perry's expedition forced Japan's opening in 1854. Between Platforms 1 and 2 there is a monument made from the wheels of a 100 series train.
