History

Ikoma-Sanjō Station opened on 27 March 1929 as a station on the Osaka Electric Tramway Ikoma Cable Line, the predecessor of the present Kintetsu Ikoma Cable Line. The Sanjō (summit) section was designated a wartime non-essential line and suspended on 11 February 1944, before reopening on 1 August 1945. The funicular terminus is built on stepped ground and consists of a stub-end track served by two platforms; in regular operation only the right-hand platform toward Hōzan-ji is used, while the opposite platform is normally closed. The station provides direct access to the Ikoma Sanjō Amusement Park and to the cluster of FM and television transmitters maintained on the Mount Ikoma ridge by Kansai-region broadcasters.
