History

Honmataga Station opened on 1 April 1970 as a temporary halt on the Japanese National Railways Yamaguchi Line, sited between Iwami-Yokota and Masuda. Initially omitted from the timetable, it was added so that pupils from the recently closed Baigetsu primary school could reach their consolidated school by train, with services scheduled around the school day. Following the 1 April 1987 breakup of JNR the halt was promoted to a full station under West Japan Railway Company. The structure remains a single side platform with a small waiting room and no station building; it is unstaffed and lies 89.6 kilometres along the line from Shin-Yamaguchi.
