History

Sanyo-Suma opened on 15 March 1910 as Suma Terminal, the temporary western end of the Hyōgo Electric Tramway. The permanent Suma Station opened in July 1912 ahead of an extension to Ichinotani, and was renamed Suma Ekimae on 12 April 1917. Operations passed to Ujigawa Electric in 1927 and to Sanyo Electric Railway in 1933. It became Dentetsu Suma in 1943 and was elevated in stages between 1945 and 1947. Limited Expresses began calling in September 1957, and through service from Hankyū and Hanshin via the Kōbe Rapid Transit Railway started in April 1968. The station took its current name on 7 April 1991, reopening after the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake the same April.
