History
Shōwachō opened on 20 December 1951 with the southward extension of Line 1 (now the Midōsuji Line) from Tennōji, and served as the terminus for roughly a year until the line was extended to Nishi-Tanabe on 5 October 1952. The U-shaped open cutting around the station was roofed over and converted into a true tunnel in 1959. When the Osaka Municipal Transportation Bureau was corporatised on 1 April 2018 the station became part of Osaka Metro, and platform-edge sliding doors entered service on 24 April 2021.
