History

Mukaihara Station opened on 28 April 1915 with the inauguration of the Geibi Railway, in what is now the city of Akitakata, Hiroshima Prefecture. The Geibi Railway was nationalised on 1 July 1937, bringing the station under the Geibi Line. Freight operations ended in December 1971 and parcel handling in March 1985. The current station building, integrated with a supermarket and the Akitakata City Local Industry Promotion Center, was completed on 26 March 1986. With the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR West. Severe rain damage suspended services from July 2018; a partial resumption on the Miyoshi - Naka-Mita section followed in April 2019. The green ticket window closed on 31 May 2021 and the station became unattended the following day.
