History

Shizumi began life on 8 February 1940 as the Shizumi signal post on the Japanese Government Railways' Wakayama Line between Ōji and Shimoda (now Kashiba). The signal post was closed on 15 July 1949 and a full station was opened on the same site on 27 December 1955. The privatisation of JNR transferred the station to JR West on 1 April 1987. Automatic ticket gates went into service on 12 February 1999, ICOCA stored-fare cards became usable on 1 November 2003, and on 23 December 2010 a new elevated station building opened with an elevator and a free public passageway. The staffed Midori-no-Madoguchi ticket office closed on 31 August 2024.
