History

Fukai Station opened on 1 April 1971 along with the rest of the Senboku Rapid Railway between Nakamozu and Izumigaoka. The station was not in the original plans, but was added at the request of residents who wanted access to the Hatchisō prefectural housing complex; Sakai City funded the forecourt as part of the agreement. The Senboku Plaza shopping zone beneath the elevated platforms opened on 8 October 1982. Custom-composed station-departure melodies by Minoru Mukaiya entered service on 26 March 2022. With the Senboku Rapid Railway's merger into Nankai Electric Railway on 1 April 2025 the station passed to Nankai's Senboku Line, and its station number changed from SB02 to NK88.

Notes

Fukai's station name traces back to a story that the Nara-era monk Gyōki dug a deep well in the area to draw water for offerings at his temple Karinji.
