History

Yamato-Shinjō Station opened on 10 May 1896 as Shinjō Station, on the privately built Nanwa Railway between Takada and Kuzu (now Yoshinoguchi). The Nanwa Railway was absorbed by the Kansai Railway on 9 December 1904, and nationalized on 1 October 1907. The Railway Line Nomenclature of 12 October 1909 placed the station on the Wakayama Line, and it was renamed Yamato-Shinjō on 11 September 1915. Freight handling ceased on 1 October 1961 and parcels handling on 1 October 1971. The station was destaffed on 20 October 1984 and passed to the West Japan Railway Company at the 1 April 1987 privatization of JNR. ICOCA acceptance via a simplified card reader was added on 17 March 2018. It is the only JR station in Katsuragi City.
