History

Matsuo Station opened on 23 July 1929 as a stop on the Shima Electric Railway, which ran from Toba to the now-defunct Shinjuko terminus. Wartime consolidation transferred the line to Mie Kōtsū on 11 February 1944, then to the spin-off Mie Electric Railway on 1 February 1964, and finally to Kintetsu by merger on 1 April 1965. Between December 1969 and March 1970 service was suspended for line upgrades that re-gauged the route to 1,435 mm. The Kamo–Gochi section, including Matsuo, was double-tracked on 11 September 1993, at which point passing facilities here were withdrawn. PiTaPa acceptance began on 1 August 2015. The platform has no station building, and the stop is unattended.
