History

Tokusa Station opened on 3 November 1918 as the temporary terminus when the Yamaguchi Line was extended from Mitani, in what is now Yamaguchi city, Yamaguchi Prefecture. The line was pushed on to Tsuwano in August 1922, leaving Tokusa as an intermediate stop. Freight handling ended in April 1980 and baggage handling in February 1984, when the station became unattended. The station came under JR West at the JNR privatisation of 1 April 1987. Flooding on 28 July 2013 suspended service between Miyano and Masuda; the section through Tokusa reopened in stages, with Jifuku - Tsuwano not restored until August 2014.

Notes

Although the station building no longer has a regular ticket office, a simple-contract daytime ticket window remains open under New-Yamaguchi station's management, and the SL Yamaguchi steam excursion and the limited express Super Oki both stop here.
