History

Watarigawa Station opened on 1 April 1961 when JNR added a stop between Chomonkyo and Mitani on the Yamaguchi Line, intended for unstaffed diesel-railcar passenger service only and located 35.5 km from Shin-Yamaguchi. Operation passed to JR West with JNR's privatisation on 1 April 1987. The station has a single side platform on the Masuda-bound side, no station building, and only a small platform shelter for waiting passengers, with access directly from two openings along the platform edge. There is no ticket-vending machine. Watarigawa is administered remotely by Shin-Yamaguchi Station and sits between Japan National Route 9 and Yamaguchi Prefectural Route 311.
