History

Mukuno Station opened on 1 November 1960 as an intermediate stop on the Japanese National Railways Gannichi Line, then under construction between Kawanishi and Kawayama in Yamaguchi Prefecture. At privatisation on 1 April 1987 the station was briefly transferred to JR West and then ceded on 25 July 1987 to the third-sector Nishikigawa Railway, which still operates it as part of the Nishikigawa Seiryū Line. The unstaffed station has a single side platform with a roofed waiting area, set noticeably higher than the surrounding road grade, and serves the village of Mukuno in Iwakuni's Mikawa district.
