History

Yonekawa Station opened on 1 December 1934 on a then-new section of the San'yō Main Line running between Iwakuni (today Nishi-Iwakuni) and Takamizu, in what is now the Sasugawa district of Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture. The route reverted to its Yanai alignment on 11 October 1944, leaving Yonekawa to be reassigned to the Gantoku Line. Freight handling ended on 1 June 1960 and parcel handling on 1 March 1971, at which point the station was destaffed and ticketing was contracted to a shop near the entrance. JR West took over at the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987.

Notes

When Yonekawa's former down-line track was removed the platform reshuffled around it — the station building today sits where the down main line used to run, with passengers boarding from what used to be the up main.
