History

Awa-Handa Station opened on 25 March 1914 as one of several intermediate stations built when Japanese Government Railways extended the Tokushima Main Line from Awa-Yamakawa to Awa-Ikeda. Direct operation was contracted out to Nikkōkan in February 1983, then ended entirely in February 1985 when the station became unstaffed. With the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, control passed to JR Shikoku, and on 1 June 1988 the line was renamed the Tokushima Line. In 2021 the timber station building was replaced by a simple shelter, though limited kan'i itaku ticket sales continue at a general store opposite the station entrance.
