History
Iwakura began on 26 March 1925 as an Ube Railway request stop when the line was extended from Ogōri (today's Shin-Yamaguchi) to Hon-Ajisu (today's Ajisu). The Ube Railway was nationalised on 1 May 1943 and the request stop was abolished at the same time. The current Iwakura Station was newly opened as a full station of the JNR Ube Line on 15 August 1953, in what was a slightly different position from the original. A waiting shelter was added in 1956, and the station passed to JR West at the privatisation of JNR on 1 April 1987.

Notes
There is no station building at Iwakura — passengers board directly from a single-platform halt. The JR West San'yō Main Line at Hon-Yura Station is only about 2 km to the west.
