History

Iwahana Station opened on 9 January 1914 as a stop on the privately operated Ube Light Railway between Ube-Shinkawa and Ube (via Fujimagari). The operator was renamed Ube Railway in December 1921 and the station was elevated from a halt to a full station in June 1941. Nationalised in May 1943, the line became the JNR Ube Higashi Line, and on 1 February 1948 it took the current Ube Line name. A 1952 realignment routed the Ube Line through Inō, abolishing the parallel Fujimagari route. Parcel handling ended on 1 October 1971. JNR privatisation on 1 April 1987 transferred operations to JR West, and the station became unstaffed on 1 May 1990. The station is 30.3 km from Shin-Yamaguchi.
