History
Maruo Station opened on 17 August 1924 when the privately operated Ube Railway extended its line from Hon-Ajisu (today's Ajisu) to Tokonami in Ube, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Nationalised in 1943, the line became the JNR Ube Higashi Line; it took its present Ube Line name on 1 February 1948. JNR privatisation on 1 April 1987 transferred operations to JR West. The unattended halt now consists of a single island platform connected to the station building by a level crossing, with only one side of the platform in active use. It is 15.2 km from the line's terminus at Shin-Yamaguchi.
