History
Hirai Station opened on 7 May 1893 as 'Hiraigawara Station' on what is now the Iyotetsu Yokogawara Line. The station was renamed Hirai on 1 June 1902. Until the Hirai - Yokogawara section was electrified on 1 October 1967, Hirai was the eastern terminus of the line's electrified portion. The station has a single island platform serving two tracks and is staffed; a wheelchair ramp was added in a recent rebuild. The current station number is IY17.

Notes
When Iyotetsu proposed in 1965 to close the Hirai - Yokogawara section and convert it to a bus route, the municipalities along the line successfully opposed the move and instead encouraged the railway to electrify it. The electrification works wrapped up in 1967 and Yokogawara-Line patronage rose afterwards.
