History

Hiwasa Station opened on 14 December 1939 as the terminus of the Mugi Line, which had been extended south from Awa-Fukui by Japanese Government Railways. It became a through-station on 1 July 1942 when the line was further extended to Mugi. With the privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 control passed to JR Shikoku. Since the discontinuation of the Muroto limited express in March 2025 only local trains call. The station has a side platform, an island platform with a passing loop, and a level crossing or footbridge linking to a second entrance on the west side facing the local roadside-station Michi-no-Eki Hiwasa.
