History

Magarikane Station opened on 15 August 1895 as Kawara Station on the private Hōshū Railroad, making it one of the older stops on the Tagawa Line. The Kyushu Railway absorbed Hōshū in 1901, and the line was nationalised in 1907. The station was renamed to its present form on 1 May 1943. A short freight-only branch line ran north to Natsuyoshi between 1899 and 1973. With the privatisation of JNR on 1 April 1987 it briefly became a JR Kyushu station before transfer to the third-sector Heisei Chikuhō Railway on 1 October 1989. On 1 April 2009 nearby Tagawa High School acquired naming rights, giving the alternative styling "Tagawa High School-mae Magarikane".
