History
Gion Station opened on 22 March 1983 on the Fukuoka City Subway Airport (then Line 1) as part of the first stretch of the network. An elevator was added on 27 March 2000, and on 1 April 2017 the station was outsourced to a contracted operator under the management of Hakata Station. On 14 February 2022 it was given the sub-name "Hakata Old Town Entrance" (博多旧市街口) in recognition of its location near Kushida Shrine and the historic Hakata district. The station is coded K10 and carries an island platform served by two tracks beneath Daihaku-dōri.

Notes
Gion is the least-used station on the Airport Line — its 7,307 daily boardings in fiscal 2024 placed it last on a line otherwise dominated by Hakata, Tenjin and Fukuoka Airport.
