History

Kurōbaru Station opened on 25 May 1968 when Japanese National Railways extended the Sasaguri Line eastwards from Sasaguri to Keisen, completing the through route that is today marketed as part of the Fukuhoku Yutaka Line. The station lies 19.9 km from Yoshizuka in the city of Iizuka, Fukuoka Prefecture, set in sparsely populated mountainous terrain at the foot of a pass. With the privatisation of JNR on 1 April 1987, control passed to JR Kyushu, which numbered the station "JC09". A second track and opposite-side platform were added in October 2001 to coincide with electrification. SUGOCA support has been available since 1 March 2009; the station remains unstaffed.

Notes

The line's one-track-through arrangement lets non-stop trains rush past the platform at close to the route maximum of 100 km/h, although a few of the local trains that "skip" Kurōbaru actually slow down as they pass.
