History
Tenjin Station opened on 26 July 1981 as the terminus of the first segment of the Fukuoka City Subway Line 1 (Muromi - Tenjin). On 20 April 1982 it became a through station with the extension to Nakasu-Kawabata and the opening of the Hakozaki Line, and in March 1993 the line was extended further to Fukuoka Airport and gained the name Airport Line. From 3 February 2005 to 26 March 2023 it functioned as an out-of-fare-gate transfer with Tenjin-Minami on the Nanakuma Line, an arrangement retired when the Nanakuma Line was extended to Hakata. The station code is K08 and Tenjin is a managed-area headquarters station.

Notes
Tenjin was the busiest station on the Fukuoka City Subway and the operator's overall network for decades, but was overtaken by Hakata in fiscal 2022 after the Nanakuma Line was extended there.
