History

Kubara Station opened on 1 October 1930 as part of the Imari Line, run by Japan's Railway Ministry, in what is now Imari, Saga Prefecture. Freight handling was discontinued in 1978 and parcel handling in 1984. With the dissolution of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR Kyushu as part of the Matsuura Line, and on 1 April 1988 the route was transferred to the third-sector Matsuura Railway and renamed the Nishi-Kyūshū Line. The station, 21.7 km from Arita, was unstaffed at the same time and was eventually reduced from its original 2-platform-3-track layout to two staggered side platforms.

Notes

Although the line is now run by a third-sector operator, Kubara is one of the few remaining unmanned passing loops on the non-electrified Matsuura Railway's Nishi-Kyūshū Line, retaining a shelter on each of its two staggered platforms.
