History
Mikawachi Station opened on 10 July 1897 as an intermediate stop when the private Kyushu Railway extended its track westwards to a new western terminus at Haiki. Nationalisation on 1 July 1907 transferred control to Japanese Government Railways, and on 12 October 1909 the line was designated the Nagasaki Main Line. On 1 December 1934 the route through Mikawachi was redesignated the Sasebo Line after a new route received the Nagasaki Main Line name. With JNR privatisation in April 1987, control of the station passed to JR Kyushu. The station is unstaffed and sits in the city of Sasebo, Nagasaki, with two side platforms and a small wooden station building serving as a waiting room.

Notes
The station served as a stop on what was the original Nagasaki Main Line for 25 years before that designation was reassigned to a different route in 1934.
