History
Kokubu opened on 3 September 1929 (Shōwa 4), although it was apparently called Kokubu-eki at the time and the early details are unclear. The stop was closed on 28 December 1943 (Shōwa 18) during wartime consolidations, then reopened at an unspecified later date. Today it is stop number 17 on the Kumamoto City Transportation Bureau's Suizenji Line (Kumamoto City Tram), served by the A and B routes. Two opposed side platforms reached by pedestrian crossing make up the stop.

Notes
The stop name comes from the local place name: the provincial government office (kokufu) of historic Higo Province was once located in this district. Kokubu is the closest stop to Kumamoto Kokufu High School. The road the tram runs along — Kumamoto Prefectural Route 28, the Kumamoto–Takamori Line — is locally nicknamed Densha-dōri ("Tram Avenue").
