History

Shimabara Station opened on 24 September 1913 as part of the Shimabara Railway Line, today located 40.5 km from the Isahaya starting point in the city of Shimabara, Nagasaki Prefecture. Freight handling was discontinued on 30 September 1984, and the present station building, designed to evoke the Ōtemon Gate of nearby Shimabara Castle, was completed on 22 December 1989. In March 2008 the existing level crossing inside the station precinct was equipped with warning bells and barriers. The station consists of two opposing side platforms serving two tracks at grade and is directly managed by Shimabara Railway, with automatic ticket machines and a staffed window selling through-tickets.

Notes

The current station building, completed in 1989, is modelled on the Ōtemon main gate of adjacent Shimabara Castle, making it one of the few station structures in Japan that visually mirrors the local feudal landmark it serves.
