Shiritsutaiikukan-mae

市立体育館前(県庁通)

History

Shiritsu-Taiikukan-mae opened on 24 May 1945 as Sunatori Station (砂取駅) on the Kumamoto City tram Kengun Line. It was renamed Taiikukan-mae Station (体育館前駅) in 1958 and to Shiritsu-Taiikukan-mae between 1964 and 1969. It is stop 19, served by both A- and B-system trams. Until February 2012 the stop could be reached only by pedestrian overpass; the overpass was removed and a signal-controlled crosswalk added at the Suizenji-Kōen end of the platforms.

Notes

The "Shiritsu-Taiikukan" (City Gymnasium) the stop was named after was destroyed during Typhoon No. 18 in September 1999 and demolished, with the site eventually turned into a park. The current Kumamoto City General Gymnasium is now 400 m away.
