History

Shōgyō-Kōkō-mae opened in 1950 on the Kumamoto City tram Kengun Line; it is stop 20, served by both A- and B-system trams. The Kumamoto Prefectural Kumamoto Commercial High School (Shōgyō-Kōkō) is right in front of the stop. In 2023 the Kengun-machi-bound platform was moved several dozen metres further along the line — past the school gate — to relieve the crowding that occurred whenever the high school was dismissed early en masse (for example, during typhoon approaches), when students would overflow the platform into the running and traffic lanes.

Notes

The stop is the rare urban tram stop with a relative-platform layout that is staggered rather than paired — and even after the 2023 move, access remains only by surface crosswalk; the former overhead walkway access was eliminated.
