University Hospital (Daigakubyoin-mae)

大学病院

History

Daigaku-byōin opened on 1 February 1954 as Iwakawa-machi on the new straight alignment built after the 1945 atomic bombing destroyed the original loop. An earlier hospital stop — Byōin-shita, opened 16 November 1915 — had stood about 100 metres east on the pre-war diverted right-of-way and had been renamed Byōin-mae and Byōin-shita alternately several times before being abandoned during the war. The 1954 stop was relocated toward Hamaguchi-machi the same year and renamed Daigaku-byōin-mae; the "-mae" was dropped on 1 August 2018. The footbridge linking the platforms was removed in November 1999 to ease road congestion, and the platforms were lengthened and raised at the same time. It is stop number 21 on the Main Line and serves Nagasaki University Hospital.
