History

Uminoura Station opened on 1 June 1959 as a stop on the Japanese National Railways Kagoshima Main Line, in the town of Ashikita, Kumamoto Prefecture. It passed to JR Kyushu at the 1 April 1987 privatisation. On 13 March 2004 the partial opening of the Kyushu Shinkansen transferred the parallel Yatsushiro–Sendai stretch of the Kagoshima Main Line to the third-sector Hisatsu Orange Railway, taking the station with it. Located 26.7 kilometres from the line's Yatsushiro starting point, the station has a single side platform serving one bi-directional track. There is no station building — only an open-fronted shelter on the platform — and the stop is unstaffed.

Notes

The station has only an open-fronted platform shelter rather than a proper building, despite sitting on what was a JNR trunk line until 2004.
