History

Tsunagi Station opened on 17 October 1927 as a station on the Kagoshima Main Line of Japanese Government Railways. The section to Yunoura was double-tracked on 23 May 1968, and the platform layout was rebuilt from an island into the present opposed-side configuration. Freight ended in 1961, baggage in 1970, and the station became unstaffed under CTC. With the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR Kyushu, and a new station building opened in 1993. When the first segment of the Kyushu Shinkansen opened on 13 March 2004, the Yatsushiro-Sendai stretch of the conventional line was transferred to the third-sector Hisatsu Orange Railway.
