History

Nishi Kobayashi Station was added by Japanese Government Railways on 1 February 1929 as an additional stop on what was then the Nippō Main Line, 41.0 km from Miyakonojō. On 6 December 1932, the stretch between Yoshimatsu and Miyakonojō was split off and redesignated as the Kitto Line. Freight operations ended in 1962 and baggage handling in 1984; the station became unstaffed in 1985. JR Kyushu inherited it at the 1 April 1987 privatisation. The station originally had two opposed side platforms connected by an overpass and a wooden station building, but the second platform, the overpass and the building were all removed, and a waiting shelter was built on the former station-building footprint. At 286.8 m above sea level it is the highest station on the Kitto Line.
