History
Hirowara Station was opened by Japanese Government Railways on 1 October 1961 as an additional stop on the existing Kitto Line track, 30.8 km from Miyakonojō. The station was built without a station building: only a small shelter on the side platform serves waiting passengers, and a bike shed sits by the access road. With the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, the station came under the control of JR Kyushu. It remains an unstaffed local stop.
