History

Takaharu Station opened on 11 May 1913 as one of several intermediate stops when Japanese Government Railways extended its Miyazaki Line southeast from Kobayashi to Tanigashira. The track was redesignated as part of the Nippō Main Line on 15 December 1923 and then split off as the Kitto Line on 6 December 1932 with Miyakonojō as the starting point. Freight service ended in 1971 and baggage handling in 1984. The station became staffed by simple consignment in 1986 with the introduction of electronic block working. JR Kyushu inherited the station at the 1 April 1987 privatisation. The current wooden station building, completed on 27 April 2000, houses a waiting area, a shop, and the offices of the Takaharu Town Tourism Association, which doubles as the simple-consignment ticket agent.
