History
Hinatayama Station opened on 1 October 1958 as a halt added to the existing Hisatsu Line, which then connected Yatsushiro to Hayato under the operation of the Japanese National Railways. The site sits 121.6 kilometres south of the line's starting point at Yatsushiro and serves the Hinatayama district of Kirishima in Kagoshima Prefecture, an area known for its onsen. The station became unstaffed in March 1985, and the small original building was later removed in favour of a long platform shelter. With JNR's breakup on 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR Kyushu, which continues to operate it today.

Notes
Although the original station building was demolished, an unusually long open waiting shelter on the platform now stands in its place.
