History

Kōtō-Chūgakkō-mae opened on 3 July 1914 as Tenokuchichō on the Kagoshima Electric Tramway, transferred to the Kagoshima Municipal Electricity Bureau on 1 July 1928, to the City Transportation Section on 26 January 1933, and to the City Transportation Bureau on 1 October 1952. On 10 October 1948 the stop was renamed Shiritsu-Byōin-mae ("Municipal Hospital Front"). It carried that name for nearly 67 years, until the hospital relocated, prompting the 1 May 2015 rename to its current Kōtō-Chūgakkō-mae ("Kōtō Middle School Front"). On the same day the new hospital's nearest stop, Tabako-sangyō-mae, was renamed Shiritsu-Byōin-mae in a swap.
